Charles Franklin Self

Charles Franklin Self, passed away on August 18, 2023, at his residence in Rome, GA. He was born on July 7, 1933, in the same city he called home throughout his life. Charles was surrounded by his loving family during his final moments.


Charles began his professional journey at Pepperell Mills and Anchor Duck before moving on to work at Miller Motor Company in Atlanta. He then joined Murdock Freight in Calhoun, GA as the Terminal and Traffic Manager. He also worked at Terminal Transport in Dalton, GA as a manager. He excelled in this role, showcasing his exemplary managerial skills. Later, his career took an exciting turn when Charles joined Liberty National Life Insurance Company where he served as a Regional Sales Manager and held the prestigious position of President of Georgia Life Underwriters Association. Charles loved attending the Torch Awards club yearly with his late wife.


In addition to his successful career, Charles valued education and was a proud graduate of McHenry High School in the Class of 1950. He believed in the importance of learning throughout life.


Charles possessed many admirable qualities that left a lasting impression on those who had the privilege of knowing him. Described as loving and kind-hearted, he had an unwavering desire to help others in any way possible. Charles dedicated much of his time to serving his community and making a positive impact on the lives of those around him. Charles was a longstanding faithful member of Sherwood Forest Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.


Outside of his professional pursuits, Charles enjoyed indulging in various hobbies and interests. Golfing was one of his greatest passions, providing him with a sense of joy and relaxation on the green fairways. Additionally, he found solace in trout fishing and cherished the moments spent casting lines in the cool refreshing streams with his son and friends. Charles also loved camping and traveling across the country with his family.


Family meant everything to Charles; they were always at the forefront of his thoughts and actions. He is survived by his loving son, Nathan Self and daughter-in-law Ginger of Rome, GA; a sister Sarah Louise Miller of Rome, GA; several nieces and nephews who commonly referred to him as uncle Bobo. Charles was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sarah Frances Jordan Self; parents, Joe Cephus Self and Sally Ford Self; brothers, Joe William Self, James Hubert Self, Robert Lee Self, Billy Ray Self, Arthur Self, and Thomas 'Jackie' Harold Self; sister, Sadie Garrett. Additionally, his loyal dog, Rosco.


Charles Franklin Self leaves behind a remarkable legacy that encompasses professional achievements and a genuine commitment to helping others. His kind-hearted nature and willingness to lend a hand will be dearly missed by all who knew him. May he rest in peace knowing that his memory will forever be treasured in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have had him touch their lives.


Funeral Services will be held on Friday August 25th, 2023 at 12:30 PM at Sherwood Forest Baptist Church with Rev. Talmadge Barnes officiating. Interment will follow in Eastview Cemetery. 


The family will receive friends from 12 PM until the funeral hour at the church.
