Mr. Houston “Fred” Bynum, age 94 of Shannon, Ga., passed away on Saturday September 9th, 2023, at his home.
Fred was born in Dawson, Ala., on April 20th, 1929, a son of the late H.F Bynum and the late Cordia Ponder Bynum. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife of 47 years, Georgia K. Bynum; three brothers, Tom, John, and Guy Bynum; three sisters, Betty, Vera, and Eva Jane.
He retired from Burlington Mills after 38 years. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and gardening. He was an excellent cook. Fred was a Mason and had been a member of the Shannon Lodge 100 F&AM since September 1955. He was an honorably discharged veteran, having served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. Fred was a member of New Antioch Baptist Church in Shannon.
Survivors include his wife Wylene P. Bynum of Rome; his loving daughter and caregiver, Vanessa Burrows and her husband, Rusty of Shannon; one grandson, Keith and Shawn Hester of Adairsville; one granddaughter, Sally and Rusty Williams of Rome; three great-grandchildren, Kallie Hester of Birmingham, Ala., Karson Hester of Auburn, Ala., and Charli Barton of Cedar Bluff, Ala.; Sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Geneva and Jack Culbertson; brother-in-law, Hobert Keith.
A Graveside service will be held on Wednesday September 13th, 2023, at 11 AM at Eastview Cemetery with Masonic Burial Rites by Shannon Lodge #100 F&AM. Mitchell Martin will deliver the eulogy. Gentlemen serving as pallbearers include, David Hughes, Russ Akins, Lance Shiflett, Mitchell Martin, Mark Brown, and Ken Keith. Pallbearers are asked to assemble at the funeral home at 10:30 AM on Wednesday.
Mr. Bynum will lie-in-state on Tuesday September 12th from 9 AM until 5 PM at the funeral home.
