J.W. Fortenberry, 78, of Rome, Georgia passed away peacefully on August 24, 2025. Born on July 1, 1947, to the late Vernon Doyle Fortenberry and Cleo Janet Holloway, J.W. lived a full and joyful life defined by service, hard work, humor, and love for his family.
A proud veteran of the United States Navy, J.W. served his country for 10 years. Following his military service, he dedicated his career to supervisory work, where his strong work ethic and leadership made a lasting impression on everyone he worked with.
J.W. was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife, Janice Willis Fortenberry; his children, Chris Fortenberry and Susan Fortenberry and Belinda Fortenberry-King and Larry King; and his cherished grandchildren—Dakota Fortenberry, Katie Fortenberry, Jason Ughrin, Julianna Ughrin, Maegan Hughes, Miranda King, and Larry King Jr. His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren, Luna Fortenberry, Loghan Hughes, Wyatt Hughes, and Sawyer Baker.
He is also survived by his brothers, Jimmy Fortenberry and Randy Fortenberry; his sisters-in- law, Beverly Fortenberry, Sharon Fortenberry, and BettyJo Fortenberry. J.W. was preceded in death by his brother, Mitchell Fortenberry. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
Those who knew J.W. will remember him as a funny, charming man whose playful flirting and easy-going nature made him instantly likable. He worked hard, provided for his family, and carried himself with a warmth that touched everyone he met.
In the end, J.W.’s big heart simply grew tired, and he slipped away peacefully in his sleep, leaving behind a lifetime of laughter and love.
A celebration of J.W.’s life will be held on Saturday, August 30th, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Reynolds Funeral Home in Shannon, Georgia. In keeping with his wishes, the family invites everyone to join in a potluck gathering —sharing good food, laughter, and stories in his honor. Guests are encouraged to bring a favorite dish to share, just as J.W. would have wanted. He hoped his farewell would feel more like a party than a service, a time to remember the joy he brought into so many lives. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered with love, laughter, and warm memories.
